On June 16th at about 2:30am, officers were dispatched to the barns at the Saratoga Casino for a report of a fire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a barn fully engulfed in flames. Together with NYRA security personnel, they leapt into action as the flames crept closer, rescuing about 10 horses from an adjacent barn who stood in their stalls, frozen in fear. Sadly, 17 horses perished in the fire.
This body camera footage is just a small snippet of the bravery and courage displayed by our team of officers that morning. It also highlights an unintended benefit of our Mounted Unit; there were officers working who understood the horses’ behaviors, equipment, and communication and it certainly benefitted them in their response.
We also want to recognize those you won’t ever see on body camera, but may often hear. Only two dispatchers were working this evening, and they seamlessly handled the heavy demands of an incident this size while also dispatching other calls throughout the city.
